Limited edition Monte Cristo “75th Aniversario”

Monte Cristo created this smoke to commemorate its company’s 75th anniversary. I am not the biggest fan of the Monte Cristo brand (non-cuban)…but there are a few that I enjoy on occassion. (See my previous Monte Cristo posts on  the “Epic” and “White”). This will also make it on my favorite Monte Cristo list.monte cristo cigar

The initial appearance of this cigar is very attractive..with its dark oily wrapper and solid construction. It’s always a good sign when you can get that perfect cut without any cracking and this smoke allowed for that.monte cristo 75th anversario

The first puff was very flavorful. I really enjoyed the hints of sweetness and balance that comes from aged tobacco. The blends Ecuadorian wrapper with Honduran and Nicaraguan filler.. worked well form me. My only major complaint is the draw. I found it to be very tight from start to finish. With other cigars I might have tossed it aside…but the flavors kept my attention.monte cristo

I conclusion…JK recommends, if you can handle the tight draw.  This smoke has a higher price tag because of it’s limited availability. (Around $10-18 based on size). Many thanks to my future brother-in-law for the great Christmas gift that included this smoke.

Know your enemy….. “The Cigar Beetle”

This is probably one of the most important lessons that every cigar smoker should learn..especially if you are beginning to collect more than a few cigars. There is one main enemy to all cigar lovers. It is commonly known as the Cigar or Tobacco Beetle.cigar beetle pic

Pic from http://thebluestudios.com/DESIGN/Beatles.htm

I started out like most people with a small humidor. I would go thru my limited number of smokes relatively fast. This made me oblivious to one of the most common threats to cigars.  Then I upgraded to a large capacity humidor (500+). I started to buy more boxes and built up a nice collection of smokes. Everything was fine for a while…but then “they” struck.

tobacco beetle damage

I was on my way out of the house for a long vacation and went to grab a few smokes. I very quickly noticed a couple tiny holes in the cigars on the top shelf. After further investigation there were several additional signs that I had a beetle problem…there was brownish dust throughout the humidor and tiny holes in several more cigars. I had been warned by some good friends that this could happen, so I very quickly jumped into action. I gave one a call to confirm the steps to SAVE as many smokes as possible.

1) Go thru and examine each cigar to see if they are worth salvaging. This can be very depressing. Anything with several holes made its way to the garbage.

2) Break up the remaining cigars in small groups and place them in ziplock bags. Then put them in your freezer for at least a few days and up to a week.

3) CLEAN every inch of the empty humidor. I used a small handheld vaccum to pick up all the loose tabacco and tabacco dust. Then I wiped down the entire humidor with a damp cloth (Use distilled water). Then I reset my humidification unit and allowed the humidor to get to a consistent level again.

4) Transfer the cigars from the freezer to the frig. This will allow them to slowly thaw out.  If any of these steps are rushed the wrappers can crack…be patient.

5) After several days you can finally put the cigars back in the new clean “BEETLE-FREE” humidor. Do not add any other cigars to your inventory for a good amount of time. You want to check the cigars daily for any new signs of a problem.

6) Start smoking and building your inventory back up! Wait unitl you feel comfortable that the problem is eliminated.

Check out this link to see a great video by cigar Aficionado detailing this process… http://bcove.me/o5r1kgic (Cut and paste in your browser)

In conclusion… Make sure you are keeping your humidor consistent as possible and check your stock as often as possible. (Check out my post on the Cigar Oasis here). Also, DO NOT bring random cigars into you humidor. I quarantine them in a bag before introducing them to the rest of my cigars. Thankfully I have only had one major encounter with beetles and I was lucky that the condo I rented had a frig/freezer available. This allowed me to bring my entire humidor with me. If you see any of the signs of beetles it is worth taking major precautionary steps to minimize the damage.

Romeo Pyramid by Romeo y Juileta… #3 ranked smoke by Cigar Aficionado

I am always  pumped to try all the cigars that make Cigar Aficionado’s top 10 list each year. A lot of times they bring attention to smokes that I was reluctant to try for some reason…. sometimes its the brand’s reputation, the appearance of the cigar, or feedback from other cigar buddies and experts. I was pleasantly surprised by the #1 cigar, the Flor de las Antillas, but didnt have the same feedback for the Romeo by Rome y Juileta. (Click Here to see my post on CA’s #1 cigar)

At first appearance, I really like the idea of this cigar. The Romeo has a dark oily wrapper that is extremely hearty. I love the pyramid size that received the highest ranking and was happy to find some at my local shop. (Click here to see more about Ol’ Times Cigars)

When I first lit the cigar I noticed vey little flavor and was hoping that it would quickly develop…like it usually does with other smokes. I did not get any great taste or spice as the cigar continued to burn.I found myself searching for different elements but it seemed to be a little boring. On the positive side…It was very well made and burned great. I think I had my expectations a little high based on the #3 ranking.romeo y julieta cigar

In conclusion… I can not give a 100% recommendation. There wasn’t anything really wrong with the construction or idea of this cigar. I just wasn’t a huge fan of the flavor. Always worth you giving it a try to see if you get better feedback…especially at the reasonable $7 price. I’ll probably go for round two to see if I missed something. Feel free to post any of your thougthts if you get to smoke one soon!

Another great limited edition smoke from Arturo Fuente… the Opus X Destino al Siglo

In the world of premium cigars the Opus X is pretty high up there (click here to see my previous Opus X post). Anyone that’s paid the price to buy one of these high end smokes was probably very satisfied. The newest special release cigar was the Destino al Siglo 2012… it was made in honor of the 100th anniverary of the Arturo Fuente Cigar Company. I was grateful that my father was generous enough to share one of the 4 cigars that come in this limited edition package.opus x siglo

The cigars that are included are as follows: 1 Fuente Fuente OpusX, BBMF – 2 Fuente Furente OpusX, Tauros the Bull – 1 Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario, Double Robusto. We both smoked the “Tauros the bull”. As soon as I lit the cigar I could sense the very familiar taste of previous Opus X cigars I’ve smoked. There are always some spice and signs of strength in the Opus X blends, but they are also very well balanced. The best part is the easy draw that comes from being so well made. opus x

This smoke burned extremely well. It was super slow with a solid ash all the way down to the nub. I am a fan of the Opus X, even despite the usually high price tag. This limited edition smoke was definitely worth the price and would be a great gift for any true cigar aficionado.

opus x

In conclusion…JK highly recommends  If your are willing to pay the price you will always get a great strong smoke with an Opus X. (Most of the normal versions start at around $15..and up,up,up). This special edition set retails around $165.

Good cigar to take on the golf course…the Monte Cristo White Churchill

When I go golfing I look for a certain type of cigar. I like to bring a big smoke that will last at least 9 holes, but is also enjoyable while being “some-what” active. The Monte Cristo White Churchill has made its way to several rounds over the years.(Click here for previous golf posts)

I had a good friend that gave me a box of these smokes a couple years ago. Before that, I used to smoke a MC white on occasion….Usually when attending the former Monte Cristo Club at the Amway Arena (Still getting over the loss of that place). Anyway, having the box gave me a better appreciation for these cigars.

Monte Cristo and its parent company, Altadis USA, are a huge name in the cigar industry. There is a very good chance you have had one of their smokes over the years…from their Rome y Julieta line of cigars to the H. Upmanns and Trinadad. Some of their cigars are very good for a new/novice cigar smoker because they are lighter in body and easy to find anywhere. golf cigar

The White label from Monte Cristo is always consistent. It is well made and burns nice a slow. A big plus on the gold course. It claims to be medium-full strength but I find it more on the medium side with a very nice balance. The first puff is sometimes a little bitter but the cigar evens out and has a cosistenet flavor that works well while you are playing a round.

In conclusion…JK recommends that you add this smoke to your list of “golf cigars”. Go with the churchill size to get maximum time out of it. You can find these at almost any cigar shop…and some liquor stores for around $10-11.
